The Secret to Loving Our Enemies

How Do We Learn to Love Our Enemies?

Q. Luke 6:27-36 (see www.jesuswalk.com) says we are to love our enemies. How do we do that?

A. Questers for secrets of the universe are generally channels of Spirit—caring gentle souls, lovers of creation, children of the one true God. But when it comes to relationships, we’re about as dumb as the next person. What makes us different, however, is that when we feel that someone is our enemy, we know we created the situation with our thoughts. We know we set it up because there is yet another lesson to be learned. Our “enemies” are some of our best teachers.

The world’s rules say love our friends and either hate our enemies or dismiss them as unworthy of notice. The Universal Law of Love goes beyond society’s rules. The definition of the Universal Law of Love is giving with gratitude. “For God so loved the world that he GAVE his only son…” (John 3:16)

So, we love our enemies by giving them something. Compassion? Understanding? Grace? Mercy? The Universal Law of Grace and Mercy says that grace is immunity and unmerited favor. Mercy is a reprieve from a fate of considerable severity without further implication. The Law of Grace and Mercy, then, is another chance. We love our enemies by giving them, first, another chance. And second, we call up the Golden Rule” “Do unto them as we would have them do unto us...” (Matthew 7:12)

Rules fail us but the Law of Love never does. We fail to give with gratitude to our enemies because loving is hard. We can barely give with gratitude to our friends and family. No wonder we have such difficulty loving our enemies.

The Secret to Loving and Being Loved

Q. Is there a secret to loving and being loved?

A. The secret to loving is to love. The secret to being loved is to be lovable. We don't like to hear that because it puts the responsibility for not being loved enough squarely on our shoulders--where it belongs.

The Secret to Destiny

Q. Is life predetermined? Do we have any control over our fate? Are we destined to spend life with one particular person?

A. No, life is not predetermined. We have free will. We participate in our destiny through making choices. Our Creator's Universal Law dictates inevitable, predetermined results. We determine our destiny by our choices; however, which choices we shall make are not and never have been predetermined.

It works like this: Picture a row of paint buckets, each filled with a different color paint -- red, blue, yellow, green, black, and white. If you choose to mix the red paint with the blue paint, Universal Law has predetermined the result will be purple paint. Unless you want purple paint, don't mix red with blue.

That's all there is to destiny.

Q. How does this apply to falling in love?

A. Choose your acquaintences carefully.
